Northern Arapaho Endowment Fund

The University of Wyoming and the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone people are working together to empower tribes, to nurture innovation for Native American sustainability, and to respect the tribes’ cultures, traditions, laws, and diverse expressions of sovereignty.

The Northern Arapaho Endowment Scholarship program was created in 1987 when the Northern Arapaho tribe gave $500,000 to UW. The gift was matched by the state, creating a $1 million endowment, which annually produces income for the scholarships.

One of the early supporters of the vision to help Northern Arapaho students earn their college education was Dr. Pius Moss, a teacher of Northern Arapaho culture at St. Stephen’s Indian School. He believed that the future of the tribe depended on tribal members being well educated and able to do battle with strong minds and clear thinking rather than with bows and arrows and physical force.

The scholarship supports UW Northern Arapaho undergraduate and graduate students and may also fund a distinguished professorship and departmental chair.
