Thomas Jefferson once said, "In matters of principle, stand like a rock.ā At UW, we stand firm for free and open inquiry.
In 2023, we created the University of Wyoming Statement of Principles on Freedom of Expression, Intellectual Freedom, and Constructive Dialogue, and we've been working hard to provide spaces, programs, and resources that foster principled and constructive engagement on campus. Here are some highlights.
- Thanks to the generosity of donors, this year we've made comprehensive dialogue training available to all students who can earn a digital badge to share with prospective employers.
- All faculty and staff have access to training in constructive dialogue, too.
- We're bringing in key scholars with expertise on free speech and dialogue, including Nadine Strossen, Martin Carcasson, and Simon Cullen.
- We now equip all new faculty with training and resources that support their ability to uphold integrity and foster genuine scholarly inquiry in UWās classrooms.
- This June, we're hosting a major conference on university principles in partnership with the University of Chicago's Forum for Free Inquiry and Expression and Heterodox Academy.
When inquiry is pursued freely and openly, knowledge can flourish, which benefits our students as well as our state and nation. The world needs more curious, fair-minded, evidence-based, complexity-embracing, no-bull-accepting independent thinkers.
Every gift to the Free Speech and Dialogue campaign strengthens our ability to make the University of Wyoming the leading public university where open inquiry, free speech, and constructive dialogue thrive.
