Horses have long been part of the University of Wyoming’s tradition and spirit. From the draft horse teams that support ranch operations at our Research and Extension Centers, to working horses that advance agricultural research, to equine mascots like Cowboy Joe and the iconic draft team Pistol and Pete—horses have carried our story across Wyoming and far beyond. They remain symbols of pride and connection, representing UW at football games, parades, and statewide events such as Cheyenne Frontier Days, the Wyoming State Fair, Laramie Jubilee Days, and even the National Western Stock Show Parade.
This Giving Day, we invite you to help us raise $60,000 to restore UW’s historic horse barn and to provide critical upgrades for the horses we care for today. With your support, we will be able to accomplish the following.
- Build new box stalls located at the historic horse barn.
- Improve outdoor and indoor pens for training, handling, and daily care.
- Replace aging barn doors and panels to ensure a secure functional space.
- Restore Pistol and Pete’s historic wagon, allowing them to continue representing UW with strength and style at community events.
Your gift will not only preserve and enhance UW’s equine facilities but also enrich the experience of the students who care for these horses. Student clubs and handlers dedicate countless hours to Cowboy Joe, Pistol, and Pete—gaining leadership, teamwork, and animal-care skills that prepare them for future careers.
Thank you for helping us honor UW’s equine legacy, support student learning, and ensure these ambassadors remain part of Wyoming’s proud story.
