Please join us in honoring a beloved environment and natural resources professor while also supporting the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Wyoming. Your support is so important in helping us to research, understand, and resolve the challenges facing our state and the world. With your help, we will help create an endowment that will both honor Steve and help the Haub School and its students and faculty continue to have the impact that Steve has had during his tenure at UW.
Dr. Steve Smutko, a vital member of the faculty for the Haub School, is retiring in 2024. He has been a beloved professor at the University of Wyoming who served from 2010–24. While at UW, Steve was an incredible leader both on campus and across the Rocky Mountain West. He served as both the Spicer Chair in Collaborative Practice and associate dean in the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources and held a joint appointment in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics and the Haub School. Steve designed, convened, and facilitated numerous public policy decision processes on natural resources issues in the west and southeast United States. Additionally, he conducted research in collaborative decision making and taught courses in environmental decision making and negotiation analysis.
Prior to his time at UW, Steve worked at North Carolina State (1995–2009) and held an extension appointment with responsibilities in the area of natural resources and public policy. He also served as director of the Natural Resources Leadership Institute. Steve earned a bachelor’s degree in outdoor recreation from Colorado State University, a master’s degree in community and regional planning from North Dakota State University, and a Ph.D. in economics with specialization in resource economics from Auburn University.
The Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Wyoming advances the understanding and resolution of complex environmental and natural resources challenges. We support students, citizens, stakeholders, and decision makers by giving them the skills and tools they need to build durable inclusive solutions to our most pressing environment and natural resource challenges.
