About

Join us in working towards positive, transformative, societal change and furthering social justice! Support the work of the School of Culture, Gender, and Social Justice with your UW Giving Day donation!

We provides a robust interdisciplinary education that enables students to understand complex social problems and prepares them to be real-world problem solvers, ready to advocate for justice and capable of developing innovative solutions to society’s most pressing needs. At the same time, through our many initiatives and unique positional, we are at the forefront nationally of combining interdisciplinary scholarship and research with community education, engagement, and activism, with an emphasis on rural spaces and rural issues in order to understand and develop solutions to enduring and systemic social justice problems.

The May 25, 2020, killing of George Floyd and attendant social unrest and protest that swept the nation brought to the fore the many social justice problems with which the United States is still grappling. Rural communities are not immune from these problems. The School of Culture, Gender, and Social Justice seeks to be at the forefront of not only understanding these problems but developing positive transformative solutions to them.

You can contribute to this important work, and be part of making a positive difference, by donating to any of our funds. A UW Giving Day donation could support a number of initiatives.

  • The Community Conversations Symposia and Speaker Series, which seeks to bridge the gap between the academy and the community by fostering dialogue around urgent interconnected social justice issues and which offers opportunities for community responsive education regarding the same.
  • The Rural Social Justice Center, the only center of its kind in the United States, which situates rural areas and rural needs at the center of social justice discourse and innovative problem solving.
  • The Black Studies Center, which uses culturally responsive teaching, rural community-focused engagement, and evidence-based research to enhance the visibility and relevance of Black studies and its capacity to directly impact contemporary social issues at the local, state, and national levels.
  • Innovative Native language revitalization work in our Native American and Indigenous Studies program, which uses cutting edge technology to aid in Native language acquisition and retention.
  • Pipeline programs, such as the Wyoming Latina Youth conference, supported by our Latina/o Studies program, which encourages and supports youth in seeking higher education and helps put them on the pathway to success once they arrive at a university setting.
  • Women’s activism and LGBTQIA rights work through our Gender and Women’s Studies and Queer Studies programs, which situates intersectional questions of gender equity within rural social justice research and advocacy projects.

There are many ways to give to the work of the school. Know that no gift is too small, and every gift helps. Gifts from 25 donors unlocks a gift of $7,000 as part of our giving day challenge. Please donate to help us meet our goal of 25 new donors to our program.

The School of Culture, Gender, and Social Justice is made up of African American and Diaspora Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, Latina/o Studies, and Native American and Indigenous Studies. The Black Studies Center and the Rural Social Justice Center are also part of the school.
