Challenges are a great way to show your support. Be the first!
The natural world has so much to teach us. That's our focus at the High Plains American Indian Research Institute (HPAIRI). Our project, understanding and communicating the role of the elk on the Wind River Reservation, is about learning. It's about acquiring and sharing ancient tribal knowledge that has important implications today.
There is much that can be learned from the respectful relationship between the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho people and the elk. Our two major American Indian Tribes make our homes on the Wind River Reservation in central Wyoming, and elk are a significant part of the historical and present cultures of both Tribes. They provide sustenance, shelter, tools, and clothing to the people but also contribute to beliefs, stories, song, and art. An elder told us, “The elk talks to us and we need to remember how to listen.” The gift you give here, your support, will remind people to listen.
We hope you will join us in supporting this important project. Any amount will help us develop and provide to teachers and students the authentic tribally created curriculum and materials that they need to meet the 2017 Wyoming Indian Education for All legislation. This is Year 3 of this project. Our staff are working with students and teachers of the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone Tribes to create instructional modules for use by the teachers and students of all Wyoming school districts.
Thank you!
