Your gift to Wyoming Public Media on UW Giving Day helps support a robust internship program that provides valuable opportunities for University of Wyoming students.
At a time when journalism and the First Amendment face significant challenges, developing strong journalism at the university level is more important than ever. Students and student training are an integral part of that effort. Your investment in students and training not only strengthens WPM’s service to Wyoming communities today, but also helps prepare the next generation of journalists, media professionals, and civic leaders for tomorrow.
Interns come from a variety of disciplines and work alongside our professional staff in news, fundraising, technology, and administration. The experience they gain helps launch media careers while providing invaluable skills that translate into a wide range of professions.
For example, interns working in news develop the ability to think critically and approach issues from multiple perspectives. They learn to write concisely, meet deadlines, use audio and video equipment, and produce content to professional and national standards. They practice research and analysis and interview artists, experts, and community members across a wide range of fields. These are skills that serve them for a lifetime, helping them become thoughtful, informed professionals and engaged members of their communities.
The impact of this work can also extend beyond the internship itself. Joan Anderson, whose appreciation for Wyoming Public Media and University of Wyoming students inspired the creation of the Joan Anderson Wyoming Public Media Student Scholarship, established an endowment to provide scholarships to UW students who are interns, externs, or volunteers at WPM. Joan’s generosity creates another pathway for students to gain experience, pursue their interests, and participate in the work of public media.
Your support helps ensure that, even in this time of media uncertainty, UW students of all backgrounds can pursue their interests and prepare for careers while enriching public media in Wyoming and beyond. Thank you!
