A missed meal is a crisis you can see coming and plan for. But not every crisis looks like that. Sometimes it's a lease a student signed without understanding the fine print. Sometimes it's finding out you're pregnant with a full course load and no idea who on campus to talk to. Sometimes it's a young family struggling to afford both university and childcare tuition. Students bring us all of it, and we want to be able to offer them the support they need navigating life outside of the university walls.
Two years ago, the Pokes Center for Community Resources came together to build a strong front door for basic needs: food, clothing, and a place where a student in crisis could be met without judgment. We have successfully built that. Now we're hoping to address those areas of life where our students need more support. We want to launch groups and workshops for pregnant and parenting students, so no one is navigating a degree program and life with a little one alone. We want to provide clothing and other material resources for parenting students and their children, taking some of the financial burden that comes with raising children off their plate. And we want to build a housing assistance fund and rental education courses, so a short-term financial gap or a misunderstanding of their lease doesn't become the reason a student leaves Wyoming for good.
A gift here is an investment in solutions to those problems we can see coming before a student has to ask for help. None of these programs exist yet in full, but your gift can help make them a reality. This Giving Day, we're asking you to help us build the next chapter of Pokes Center for Community Resources so we can ensure all students are supported during their time here at the University of Wyoming.
Thank you for helping UW students!
