UW's Jazz Studies Program is an integral part of the UW Department of Music. The program offers a strong curriculum of academic jazz courses, in addition to providing unique opportunities to perform on and off campus in a variety of venues, including concerts, festivals, and clinics.
We are seeking $10,000 to support special projects including tours, community outreach, and inreach events, high-profile performances and competitions, recruiting activities, video and audio recordings, and enhanced publicity.
The Jazz performance major launched in 2020, and after only 2 years we have 14 majors, and the program continues to grow! We have undergraduates and graduate students from Wyoming, Colorado, Texas, Idaho, Wisconsin, and beyond. Summer 2021, The Wyoming Jazz Ensemble was invited to give performances during international festivals in France and Italy. Along with only 9 other collegiate Jazz bands in the US, the WJE will have been invited to compete in January 2023 at New York City's 'Jazz at Lincoln Center.'
The program's director Ben Markley, a jazz pianist, has performed with Brian Lynch, Greg Osby, Eddie Henderson, Terell Stafford, George Garzone, and John Fedchock. Markley's latest album "Ari's Funhouse" features his big band arrangements of drummer Ari Hoenig's composition, with Ari on drums. The album received a 4-Star review from DownBeat Magazine and enjoyed excellent critical acclaim.
Thank you for supporting Jazz Studies at UW!
