About

George "Doc" Frison is a Wyoming legend and lived a uniquely Wyoming life. He was a rancher, a World War II veteran, and then one of the most influential archaeologists of his generation. This campaign honoring his career and legacy will be used to support graduate students studying archaeology at the University of Wyoming—the future George Frisons.

Doc was a prominent faculty member at UW. Born in Worland in 1924, he spent the first half of his life as a sheep and cattle rancher outside of Ten Sleep with his wife June. He served in the Pacific in World War II with the Navy. A lifelong artifact collector, in 1962 he chose to pursue his passion, the prehistory of Wyoming. He completed his bachelor’s degree at UW in 1964 and then earned a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. Only three years later, he was hired as an assistant professor and department head of the newly created Department of Anthropology. Though George’s career as an academic started late in life compared to most, he went on to have a career as a field archaeologist rivaled by few of his peers. He dug dozens of important sites, especially in the earliest periods of Wyoming prehistory.

Thank you for helping us honor this legend and supporting future archaeologists!
