Please consider supporting the Violence Prevention Center this year.
At the Violence Prevention Center, we believe in fostering a culture of respect, safety, and inclusion across our campus community. Our approach emphasizes the power of collective action to challenge harmful norms. By addressing the layers of the student experience—from personal interactions to systemic influence—we aim to create sustainable cultural change that empowers students to be active participants in building a more compassionate and safe campus by using proven public health strategies with a focus on primary prevention. Together, we can cultivate an environment where everyone thrives. In a nutshell, we give students the knowledge, practice, and courage to help keep themselves and their peers safe.
Students know who we are, even if they don’t know our official name.
- We are the Green Dot people. Since 2019, UW has used the Green Dot Student Bystander Intervention Program that teaches students and staff strategies to become involved if they witness the warning signs of sexual assault, dating or domestic violence, and stalking. So far, over 2,000 students and staff have received the full Green Dot training, and another 3,500 students have received overviews through our Saddle Up program. UW saw a nearly 20 percent reduction in instances of sexual violence overall, a reduction of 27 percent in instances of intimate partner violence, a reduction of 26 percent in stalking, and an incredible 47 percent decrease in instances of sexual harassment between students. Green Dot is working!
- We are the Healthy Relationship people. We provide over 30 workshops and activities for students and staff that focus on primary prevention strategies for a variety of issues—relationship green and red flags, consent, boundaries, hazing prevention, the Dating Handbook, drinking culture and consent, authentic and restrictive masculinity, Not Yer Nana’s Bingo, and much more. We partner with all student organizations including ASUW, fraternities and sororities, and athletics.
- We are the Denim Day and Love Better people. Every year, we celebrate Denim Day in April with a week of activities including guest speakers, storytelling events, tabling and activities to bring awareness to survivors of gender and power-based violence, and prevention strategies. You also know us from Love Better Week every February leading up to Valentines Day where we present unique ways to have healthy relationship conversations through interactive displays. We also put up a table nearly every Friday. During last year’s calendar school year, we connected with over 7,000 students during our trainings and events.
Over the last two years, the Violence Prevention Center has seen more than a 50 percent increase in training requests and student interactions without an increase in our office budget. Although we have been very creative by finding ways to meet the demand, it is beginning to become a struggle—our success depends on our availability.
The work we do is incredibly important. We help keep students safe. Your gift will help us continue to provide these integral services to the students and staff of the University of Wyoming. Thank you!
